Nick Reyniers

Illustration, for Nick, is about meandering the concept of humdrum reality in contemporary every day civilization. Taking that perception, wrapping it up in last night’s kebab paper, running down the street and launching it into the nearest landfill site because that was a load of old rubbish. Essentially Nick likes drawing and is good at it and has been since he drew a teenage mutant ninja turtle for his mate Jamie.

Nick deals with a lot of popular culture, referencing films and cartoons from his childhood and makes fun, not in a derogatory way, but in a respectful way.

“To me, illustration is about being able to find a different dimension to what is perceived by society as “standard” or “normal”. I do this by altering minor details to create strange creatures that inhabit new worlds. As a form of escapism I enjoy inventing these strange characters and immersing myself in imaginary scenarios and personas.”

“I would describe my work as surreal with a subtle, but underlying powerful, sense of humour, combined with a style that is graphically simple and immediate. I have achieved this by parodying popular culture through various media, and combining it with my satirical sense of humour.” Nick Reyniers, last Tuesday

Nick is dealing with the topic of Social Types. Looking at everyday life through binoculars that only lets you see the slightly darker side of life, but in a humourous way. Nick’s way of showing us this is through the book ‘people I met last week’. ‘People I met last week’ is a taster into Nick’s way of thinking and style of illustration.
