Litro scoops fresh editorial team
London’s number one, short fiction magazine has brought together two new editors with fresh and unusual angles from which to present their selection of stories.
Following Tom Chivers’ departure to concentrate on his poetry and poetry events, Dena Ziari and Sophie Lewis form the new team. Already Ziari’s influence can be felt in the latest issue of Litro, April’s Africa special, showing off the talents of a range of prose-writers and poets including Nikesh Shukla, Laura Nelson, Katy Ideh, Isobel Dixon, Wayne Visser and Susmita Bhattahcharya.
Dena shall be taking her creative talents to Litro – Online as well.
Lewis starts to get comfy in the role of editor-in-chief with the May issue, themed around the Hispanic world. Highlights of this one will include shocking short fiction from Catalan writers Francesc Serés and Jordi Puntí, a previously unpublished translation of a story by celebrated Argentinian writer Silvina Ocampo, and the first ever publication of Chilean sensation Roberto Bolaño’s poetry in English translation in the UK.
While Lewis has a background in short stories, from the founding and judging of the BBC National Short Story Award with Prospect magazine as well as from her work for avant-garde publishing house Dalkey Archive Press, she is also a passionate champion of translators and work in translation. She translates from French but aims to publish fiction from as wide a range of languages and cultural backgrounds as possible.
She should have ample backing from Ziari, whose Persian extraction is an important part of her world view, and whose special study of architecture and own work as a poet uniquely equip her to read through and for a literary London.
